Why is a 12v boat battery charger the way to go onboard?

Batteries are one of the sources of energy available onboard vessels that are used in case of emergency and blackout situations onboarding a ship. These are used apparently for low voltage DC systems such as emergency lighting, bridge navigational instruments, GMDSS, etc. and therefore, 12v boat battery charger is used in case of the emergency or need for temporary power.

When the operation of a battery is active in a circuit, it offers voltage and current and gets discharged itself. It will continue to supply current to the equipment, which entirely depends upon the capacity measured in ampere-hours.

Therefore, the arrangement is made available onboard ship to charge the batteries again after its use. Moreover, the arrangements should be made in a way that the batteries can get charged fully on a timely basis as they lose charge gradually over a period.

The batteries can be charged with dc power supply; however, currently, there are no working ships on the dc supply system, and thus it is required to change the ac power into dc to charge the batteries.

In normal circumstances, the battery is charged with the help of a full charge circuit, and once it gets charged fully, the battery charges are maintained by the charge circuit. Once the power is available from the primary system, the batteries get connected back to the charging circuit manually. Also, there’s a test switch provided to test the system as a part of the routine test.

To measure the condition of a battery with a 12v boat battery charger, generally, two parameters are considered, voltage and specific gravity. The specific gravity is measured with the help of a hydrometer while the latter is measured by using a voltage meter.

Additionally, for the safety purpose in most of the modern ships, an interlock between the exhaust fan and a 12v boat battery charger in the charging room is installed. This is done to ensure the battery charging operation is interrupted when the exhaust fan isn’t operative. This prevents the explosion due to the build-up of the hydrogen gas caused by the process of battery charging.
